Coroner’s Inquest Set for April into Chimamanda Adichie’s Toddler Son’s Death
In a courtroom heavy with unspoken grief, the Lagos State Judiciary has fixed April 14, 2026, to launch a coroner’s inquest into the tragic death of Nkanu, the 21-month-old son of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Nkanu passed away on January 7, 2026, after complications arose from preparatory medical procedures, shattering the private world of a literary icon known for her powerful stories of human struggle.
The Adichie family, struck by profound loss, swiftly issued a legal notice to the involved hospital, pointing fingers at medical negligence and professional misconduct as key factors in the toddler’s untimely end.
Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji of the Yaba Magistrate Court set the date following formal appearances by all sides: Kemi Pinheiro for the Adichie family, Adebola Rahman for the Lagos State Attorney-General, and representatives for Atlantis Hospital and Euracare.
The magistrate emphasized the stakes, declaring that the inquest stemmed from the Attorney-General’s request, as the state shares in the sorrow. “The Lagos State Government is also bereaved; that is why the Attorney-General has taken this step. It is not just the family of the deceased that is affected,” she said.
Court orders now demand that parties file and exchange witness statements before the hearing, with the autopsy findings leading off to pinpoint the exact cause of death.
The family’s counsel revealed plans to present damning evidence of alleged gross medical negligence—claims of possible overdose, wrongful prescription, improper administration of propofol, and misdiagnosis.
They intend to summon five independent medical experts and Nkanu’s father, himself a medical doctor, to testify and seek the truth behind the veil of medical routine gone wrong. Proceedings will unfold methodically: Euracare opens, followed by the Adichie family’s case, then Atlantis Hospital, as the quest for accountability presses forward.
